ROLE OF BONES IN OUR BODY

Bones play an important part in the overall function of your body. They provide a frame for your body, they protect vital organs such as your heart, and they even produce blood that is used by your body. When you walk or run, it is because your bones and muscles are working together.

From our head to our toes, bones provide support for our bodies and help form our shape. The skull protects the brain and forms the shape of our face. The spinal cord, a pathway for messages between the brain and the body, is protected by the backbone, or spinal column.

Imagine what could happen to your heart and lungs without the protective armor of your rib cage.  When you were born you had over 300 bones. As you grew, some of these bones began to fuse together. When muscles contract, the bones to which they are attached act as levers and cause various body parts to move.

Bones, like all other tissues in your body are alive. Bones are the main support structure for us, they are made of a hard material that is mainly calcium. Throughout this hard substance, are blood vessels and nerves.
